Unphotographed Women

Researching the lives of the women who lived in Mobile's historic red-light district is a challenging task. Many of these women left behind few personal records like letters or diaries describing their experiences as prostitutes. The public records are also sparse, as the combination of their gender and class makes them particularly invisible historical characters. Furthermore, many of these women changed their names as they entered the profession. However, some details of their lives can be pieced together with the available records. Click on the names below to learn more about these women.
